Region VIII- Women achievers honored
Tacloban City, Leyte (19 March) -- Three Region 8 Women achievers were honored during the Women’s Month celebration program held recently at the RDC Conf. Room of the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) office.

Awarded for exemplary contributrion to their respective community, local government unit and organization were. Integrated Manobo Tribal Chieftain Divina Padecio; Capoocan Municipal Mayor Marietta Porcincula and Runggiyan Social Development Foundation Inc. (RSDF) Executive Director Paulina Lawsin Nayra.

The three were awarded for their exceptional leadership, for their contribution to the community especially the plight of women. For empowering women in their locality and community, for their innovation on humanitarian endeavor and implementation of Gender & Development (GAD) programs and projects.

In an interview with Chieftain Padecio, she narrated her contribution in leading twelve (12) tribal groups of the Manobo in their upland farming and the Magsasaka-Siyentista Techno Gabay Program of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-8) to be self sustainable. Adding recently to their tribe the Badjaos of Muslim Mindanao who migrated to this part of the country.

Mayor Porcincula of Capoocan was conferred the GAWAD Galing Pook Award of 2005 and Special Citation on Gender-Responsive Governance. She was an expert in empowering her women in her municipality. In an interview she stated that the cry of her municipality were on gender equality. Through women empowerment according to her we were able to implement the GAD best practices of our municipality.

Runggiyan Executive Director Nayra on the other hand, were very vocal in advocating on the plight of women on domestic violence and the rights of women. Specially on the Mainstreaming of GAD – RSDF programs and project.
